Relating to Marischal College and University of Aberdeen

This shall serve as a homepage in order to link to other pages.

This page exists courtesy of the Marischal College Appreciation Society (est. 2026). The author also wishes to extend his great thanks to George Keith (who was the 5th Earl Marischal), for actually founding the university; this exact role as compared to his companions has been disputed though.

A Brief History

And here is presented, briefly, a history of this most esteemed college, written by the author (N.O.A.).

Some time prior to the foundation, circa 1553, was born George Keith (then a Mr., but succeeding to the earldom after the passing of his grandfather, William, on 7 October 1581). He was a powerful and astute man, the sort to whom matters important to the realm were assigned; including, notably, the ambassadorship to Denmark, in June 1589, in order so that the marriage between the Scottish king James VI and Anne (daughter to the Danish king Frederick II) may have been arranged (this endeavour did succeed, for the marriage progressed, with the vows exchanged that same year). Marischal however, not content with using his vast gifts merely for the benefit of others, resolved also to produce something of his own, and that was to be a college (or university), founded in the far-flung northern city of Aberdeen. Whilst perhaps this was driven more by the desires of the local clergy of the New town (contrasting with the Old town, where King's College lay its foundations), but it may not be stated that Marischal's contributions were insubstantial.
